Welcome to Bangladesh Medical University

Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Liver Transplantation Surgery

Professor Dr. Bidhan Chandra Das

It is my honor and privilege to introduce the Department of Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic, and Liver Transplant Surgery at Bangladesh Medical University to the people of Bangladesh.

Our department is well-organized, highly equipped, and supported by a dedicated team committed to managing complex surgical conditions involving the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas. We utilize state-of-the-art open, laparoscopic, and minimally invasive techniques to treat both benign and malignant diseases, including complex liver tumors and biliary injuries. In addition, we are actively engaged in academic advancement and research, with a focus on innovative surgical techniques.

Our team works through a multidisciplinary approach in collaboration with medical oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists to ensure accurate and individualized treatment plans for every patient. Recently, we have been focusing on the treatment of end-stage liver disease through liver transplantation, and we are working to establish it as a sustainable program.

Your liver, gallbladder, and pancreatic health are our highest priorities. Our highly specialized team is committed to providing the best possible care and management for these conditions.

Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Liver Transplantation Surgery

Modern hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery began with the German surgeon Carl Langenbuch in 1888, when he performed the first liver resection. Liver resection techniques were further modernized by Ichio Honjo and Lortat-Jacob shortly after the Second World War. Liver transplantation was pioneered by Thomas Starzl in 1968. In the 1980s, laparoscopic procedures were introduced worldwide in this field.

The activities of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at our university began in 1999 as a unit under the Department of General Surgery. In 2013, the unit was upgraded to the Division of General Surgery. The Master’s course in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery was introduced in 2014 under this division. In 2018, the university authority officially established it as the Department of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery.

Professor Zulfiqur Rahman Khan, Professor Sahidur Rahman, Professor Mohsen Chowdhury, Professor Bidhan C Das, Dr. Mohammad Saif Uddin, Dr Nur-E-Elahi and Dr. Ayub Ansari have worked in this department since its inception.

The department deals with complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases, focusing on the surgical treatment of disorders affecting the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and bile ducts. These procedures are performed to treat malignant tumors, benign cysts, infections, and structural abnormalities using both open and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

The department’s main areas of expertise include liver surgery, biliary surgery, and pancreatic surgery. Liver surgery involves the resection of primary and metastatic liver tumors, drainage of abscesses, and management of liver trauma. Biliary surgery includes the treatment of bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma), biliary injuries, strictures, and stones. Pancreatic surgery involves procedures such as the Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy) for pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis.

Recently, the department has initiated a living donor liver transplant program at the university.
